Are You Taking The Life Out Of Your Liver? Your liver has many functions; it stores
certain vitamins, minerals and sugars for use as fuel, cleanses/filters the
toxins out of your blood and controls the production/excretion of cholesterol.
Your overall health and vitality, to a great extent, depends upon the health of
your liver. The thousands of enzyme systems that control virtually every body
activity are created there. If your liver fails to create even one of these
enzymes, overall body function is impaired, creating greater metabolic stress on
your body. It is no wonder that the incidence of cancer is three times higher in
the current generation of baby boomers than in their parents! The most important function may be the secretion of bile; a bitter, yellowish substance released by your liver into your intestines for the purpose of digesting fats - it breaks them down into small globules. Bile is stored in your gallbladder and released as needed for proper digestion. When your liver is put under stress, damage and dysfunction occur.
Why Your Health may be Suffering Modern lifestyles can overstress your liver. Alcohol, tobacco, environmental pollutants, food additives, agricultural pesticides, popular cosmetic ingredients, common household products, stress, pharmaceutical and OTC (over-the-counter) drugs (including oral contraceptives and caffeine), gallstones, home repair materials, artist materials, garden chemicals and building materials can all kill liver cells. Animal studies have indicated that the Standard American Diet (SAD) also has extremely damaging effects on liver function. If your liver becomes sluggish and metabolically underactive, then the bile flow produced by the liver becomes stagnant. Symptoms of liver imbalance include headaches, bruising easily, anxiety, depression, confusion, fatigue, jaundice, impaired libido (sex drive) and mental function, food allergies, multiple chemical sensitivities and PMS, as well as conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease. When your liver is damaged it cannot remove toxins, which then build up in your blood and eventually, your brain.
How can You Improve the Health of Your Liver? The curative effects of natural herbs have
been used for centuries against liver disorders. Scientists have discovered a
number of active principles in many herbs,
including dramatically anti-hepatotoxic (liver supporting) properties. They have
effectively been used to treat mild conditions requiring gentle liver
Studies show that Milk Thistle can protect the liver and may also promote the regeneration of healthy, new liver cells. According to the Physicians’ Desk Reference (PDR) for Herbal Medicines, milk thistle compounds “inhibit the entrance of toxins and block toxin-binding sites through alteration of the liver cell’s outer membrane.” Silymarin, the main compound in milk thistle, increases your body’s production of glutathione. Glutathione is used for detoxification cells in the liver, to cleanse your blood. Over 100 scientific research papers have found that milk thistle may be proven effective against chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and liver damage. It also stimulates hepatocytes (liver cells) to replace diseased tissue. A one-month study involving 129 patients showed that milk thistle brought a 50% improvement in the symptoms of toxic-metabolic liver damage, fatty degeneration of the liver for various reasons, liver enlargement and chronic hepatitis.
Artichoke contains both liver-protective/restorative powers. It acts as a blood purifier and has been proven in clinical studies to lower cholesterol, triglyceride levels and other metabolic waste products. Each time your liver neutralizes a toxin, it sustains damage. Artichoke is helpful in restoring liver health by relieving the symptoms of liver damage, diseases and insufficiency, plus poor digestion, chronic constipation and the prevention of gallstones.
Bee Pollen is an excellent source of rutin; a bioflavonoid proven to help strengthen capillaries and used to treat glaucoma. In addition, research suggests that bee pollen contains natural antibiotic compounds.
Royal Jelly supports the health of the immune system and helps increase your absorption of nutrients. Royal jelly is a concentrated source of many nutrients, including B vitamins, various minerals and some antibacterial components that are not found anywhere else. Research confirms that royal jelly may lower cholesterol, improve the LDL/HDL ratio and support your immune system.
Ginseng is an adaptogen that helps to stabilize blood sugar through glucose metabolism, boosts your immune system and improves mental and physical stamina, allowing the body to better manage stress.
Traditional Chinese
Medicine (TCM) Herbal Blends can be extremely beneficial in helping to
correct the symptoms of liver dysfunction. Ziziphus
Jujuba (Da-Zao) is used as a prophylactic against liver disease. Mamordica
Charantia (Ku Gua) supports the liver in stabilizing blood sugar levels. Grataegus
Pinnatifida (Shan Zha) is mainly used for symptoms of food
stagnation; abdominal bloating, indigestion and flatulence (gas). Phaseolus
Radiatus (Lu Dou) is traditionally used as an anti-toxin. Hordeum
Vulgare (Mai Ya) provides enzymes and vitamins necessary for proper
digestion and blood cell manufacture. Poria Cocos Wolf
(Fu Ling) is helpful for serious or chronic illness and may help
strengthen your body’s immune system. Taurine may
be the best resort for liver disease or any other condition in which tissues
swell or fluid accumulates. Further, taurine aids in digestion and the
manufacture of bile in your liver to metabolize fats and help break down
cholesterol. Taurine may also help gallbladder function by forming tauracholate
from bile acids; tauracholate helps increase
cholesterol elimination in the bile. Taurine is a key component of bile acids,
plays a major role in optimal liver function and is required for the removal of
toxic chemicals and metabolites from your body. Lecithin,
otherwise known as choline, is an essential
nutrient for cell protection. Lecithin lowers LDL cholesterol, raises HDL
cholesterol and helps to reduce blood pressure by allowing the blood vessels to
relax for better blood flow. It helps keep fatty deposits from building up in
your liver. A diet low in lecithin leads to an inability to process fats,
resulting in weight gain, liver dysfunction and possibly even liver cancer! Dandelion is used for improper bile flow, urinary tract inflammation and liver and gallbladder dysfunctions. Dandelion supports liver health and fluid balance and is also helpful against kidney stones and as a general body tonic. The Australian Journal of Medical Herbalism sites two clinical studies that demonstrate the liver-healing properties of dandelion. It has also been used for skin complaints and to stimulate the flow of bile.
Slippery Elm has a soothing effect on the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It produces a protective lining upon inflamed and ulcerated mucosal surfaces, making it effective against gastritis and stomach ulcers; conditions common in those who suffer from toxic livers and abnormal bile production.

Authors' note:
Sure this sounds strange but maybe your life isn't worth it. Mine is. Today I use liver supplements that I get from popular fishing holes and get the priceless raw livers from the sea salmon or steelhead coming up the river. Asked people if you can clean their salmon for the guts while the fish is still alive. That your fighting cancer and need the live enzymes. Then put the liver into ice immediately and the enzymes are considered good for up to 96 hours. Grind livers with carrots and press the liquid out and drink immediately.
After
the livers got older than this, I just cook some of the livers for the
mineral content. I always took enzymes capsules 15 minutes prior
to the meal when eating cooked foods. I was also taking enzymes between
meals too. |
